As of this writing, I’ve been blessed and honored to visit the body of Pope Benedict six times. Three times in a private viewing at his monastery and three times in Saint Peter’s Basilica.
Pope Benedict was my pope and it’s been a joy to have the chance to say goodbye.
Coming to Rome for the funeral?
The Visitation
The church is open 7 am until 7 pm Tuesday and Wednesday. You’ll go through security twice. No water bottles are allowed. The line moves quickly. The most I had to wait was 90 minutes. You cannot stop in front of the body, you must keep moving. Keep this in mind so it doesn’t come as a shock.
The Funeral
The funeral is in Saint Peter’s Square at 9:30 am.
I’d line up at 7 am at the latest. Again, you’ll go through security twice. No water bottles allowed. You can try to bring in store bought water, but you may need to throw it away. Definitely do not bring your fancy reusable bottle from home. Bags are fine. Bring things to have blessed at the funeral. At the end of the Mass, Pope Francis will impart his Apostolic Blessing.
Around Rome
My free guide to Catholic Rome could be helpful.
My free guide to the Borgo neighborhood covers restaurants, cafes, bars, and churches around the Vatican.
Tipsy Tuesday

In the News
I have been busy. NBC, ABC, BBC, USA Today, The Washington Post, AP, NPR, EWTN, and a bunch of local outlets. I hope I am representing the people of the Church well with my quick commentary.
It’s an exciting time to be in Rome. The joy of celebrating his life definitely outweighs the sorrow of his passing.
Pray for the soul of Pope Benedict, and as his secretary, Archbishop Gänswein, told me the other day, remember we can now pray to Pope Benedict to ask for his intercession.
